The gospel is what we must hear and believe in order to receive forgiveness of sins today. The gospel is the loving story/good news of the Son of God and His death, burial and resurrection (Acts 2:22-24, 32-33, 36-37). Before this act of love was completed humanity was bound by the old laws, thank our Lord and King for His new covenant of grace (Rom 7:6).
In obeying the gospel or Christ we have newness of life (Rom 6:4), born again (John 3:3, 5) the moment we submit ourselves to being immersed for the forgiveness of sins by the saving blood of Jesus, we are sealed (Eph 1:13)
(Take careful note: disobeying results in eternal punishment/hell, 2 Thess 1:8-9)
Context: The Apostle Paul inspired by the penmanship of the Spirit wrote to Christians in Ephesus, these Christians had already been immersed in Christ (Acts 19:5) which is why they were now sealed in the Spirit of promise, reminded by their teacher (Paul the Apostle).
A careful student will properly make effort to understand Bible chronology and grammatical sentencing in order to make clear the events as they took place in history. This will result in rightly dividing the scriptures (2 Tim 2:15) in order to defend his/her faith (1 Peter 3:15).
